Funny English Name of Places in Karnataka

Need a good party game for elders and the young adult? Don’t have the time to prepare. Here is a game that has been a hit in all parties where I know it was played. Funny English names of Indian Places. Hand out a list of Place names translated in English. All participants have to identify the actual place name from the translated meaning. Let me explain with an example, Win Town is the translation. If the participant identifies this as Jayanagar, then he gets a point. It’s an easy game once you know the place names. But until then, it’s a brain tickler.
In a party in Bangalore, where the participants could relate to Kannada more than Hindi, it was a tough task to find English translations for the places in Karnataka. So I came up with this list of places in Karnataka that I have translated to English. Play this game and check it out for yourself the enthusiasm of people in the party.

May 16th this year

Have been wanting to write this for about 15 days now. Thought better late than never!!!! :)

For all of you who did not know, I joined my current company on May 16th. So on this day, this year, I complete 7 years of my stint with the current company. That's out of the scope of this post.  Coming back to the topic, what did I do for Shri's 33rd Bday????

The research began about 3 weeks before his bday. The internet gave ideas like
a) Give him a B'day card written in 33 languages
b) Give him love coupons
c) Do a party with 33 people
d) Make him feel like a kid and have a kid's party. (One of these years when I really can't bare his monkey business anymore, I may do this. Everyone who know him will know why)
e) Any regular gift would not be sufficient, would it??

I couldn't decide what to do. Then, I got so busy with .. you know what.... for a change.. work.
Then there was the chicken Pox. And on Monday, a week after we had been to the Sunday Soul Santhe and 2 days before Shri's Birthday, it struck to me that I had not planned anything. Then, I called up Ms. P from 'The little things - gifts' whom I had met at Soul Santhe. She promised me that she would deliver 'Customized Love Coupons' on the 15th if I could collect it from her.

I have to write about everything I have had to go through to get a gift that was different what I gave him previously. 15th evening was very cloudy so I decided to take an Auto to go to Ms P's house and it started raining. I have never been out in such heavy rains in an auto. Call it my luck, the driver's luck or the auto's luck, we just missed a falling tree. I could feel a few leaves touch my legs. :) The pedestrians were screaming 'You are lucky'. It took me a while to come out of that shock. I was completely wet by the time I reached Ms. P's house. My heartfelt gratitude to Ms. P and her mother who invited me to their house, mind you I had chicken pox, and served me hot coffee and also forced me to change my clothes.

Coming back to the gifts, I got the love coupons very well gift wrapped by Ms. P. Shri being Shri I didn't know what his reaction would be. So to be on the safer side, I bought a cake, T Shirt and a Bermuda shorts for the Chaddi Chikka. I really don't know if he liked it as there was no reaction from him at all.

Anyways, here are a few pictures from the day!!!!!

Chaddi chikka in his new clothes that were both one size smaller.  :(

Anyways, here is a sneak peak into the Customized love coupons which I think Shri liked. There were about 10 coupons and here are a few.

With Love to Shri!!!

The picture is of him and his boys together. On the farthest left is Shri!!

Difficult one for me!!!!

It says, one instance of Public Embarrassment will be bypassed without any complains. Everyone who knows Shri would know the significance.

Exclusive use of remote for one night!!! I want one of these coupons too!!!

Signing off now, I have to start writing about something else now. :)

Birthdays over the years!!!

What comes to ones mind if it is a dear one's b'day??? Cake, gifts, flowers, parties... Basically I would like  to be made felt special eery b'day, year after year. That is the reason behind me putting in so much effort in making the person felt special. I try and do it for everybody dear to me.

Now the question is, what do u do if that dear one is your spouse?? I have to make him feel special but how? Again, cake, flowers, gifts and parties.

Cake - will be done.
Flowers - a big no for Shri.. He won't even care.
Gifts - What do I gift him that I have not gifted earlier? I usually gift him something that is not very expensive but is different. And of Course there is the Floater from Bata and a T shirt. Let me get to that in a moment.
Parties - Throwing a surprise party every year is no surprise. I did that for Shri's 29th B'day (2008), when he was stepping into his 30th.

So what have I done in the past? and What do I do now to keep up with the past tradition?

2004 - This was his first bday after our wedding. It was very difficult but I thought a Vintage car would be a good idea. No No, Not the real one but a toy vintage car which he played with for over a month. Also got him a floater from Bata.

2005 - I seriously don't remember.  I sure do remember about the floater. It was just a replacement of the previous floater. Same model and same brand. I had joined Mcube in this year on this very day.

2006 - Got him a Writing board so he would complete his MBA/MCA. He didn't complete either. Also got him a wireless router. The floater was surely there (same model and same brand)

2007 - I think, we again bought a floater for him, this time not from Bata. :) I think he still uses the same floaters even today. So the tradition of buying floaters for him stopped this year, may be until this one wears out.

2008 - Surprise party on the terrace. Su was 8 months old. Ammi (Shri's sis) was pregnant. We really caught him off guard as Rakhi, Bharat, Indu and Krishna came.

2009 - If you ask Shri any question - 'what would u like to eat for breakfast?' The answer would be Curd Rice. If you asked him 'What would u like for lunch/dinner?' The answer would be Curd Rice. Now, you will know that it is not for his love for Curd Rice. The answer to the question 'Where will we go on Sunday?' also would be Curd Rice. or even the question 'What are you doing with the hammer?' also would fetch only Curd Rice. You won't know how bugging it is until you really experience it. So one b'day, Shri didn't have the regular cake instead he had, 'Curd Rice Cake'. I quote it coz, the result has reduced the probability of me getting 'Curd Rice' as a reply to only, breakfast, lunch or dinner. I can live with that. Believe you me, I seriously can live with that. :)

2010 - Don't remember doing much. We went to Pai Comforts for dinner. Just bought him a T Shirt and a Trouser.

2011 - This year, asked all friends to come home. My father in law was at home. Got him a T shirt. Asked all friends to write on the back of the T shirt when he was wearing it. He didn't know what was written on it until it was done and we showed him the picture. Later, I also gave him a Hawaiian Rum that Vij bought from Metro. The drinking card game was much used in Hardik's Bachelor's party in Dec 2011 and that which almost killed all of us.

2012 - What about this year???? Will let u know in a while as it is already 12 and I have to wish him now.. This year is no different from the past few.... It is going to be interesting, I promise.

Sumedhaa's Mothers day gift

I was surprised when Sumedhaa called me in the morning to wish me 'Happy Mother's day!' My day was made. In midst of the chicken pox pain and the sorrow of me not seeing Su though she is in Bangalore, her words had made my day. But the real treat came when Su called in the evening and told me "Amma, check your mail, you have a surprise mail. Check on You tube." And this was what was there on Youtube....

The best mother's day ever!!!!

Beautiful Mind ; Beautiful Queries 2

Traffic Signals

Su usually gives us the directions to either stop or go at any traffic signal. There are many signals where free left is allowed and this is displayed with a left green arrow. After some time of noticing this Su made an observation.

"When the green arrow is pointing to left, we have to go left. When the green arrow is pointing to right, we have to go right. When the green arrow is pointing up, don't we have to go up????"

(Hand on wide open laughing mouth)!!!

Beautiful Mind ; Beautiful Queries

I was teaching Kannada swaras to Su. "ಅ, ಆ, ಇ, ಈ, ಉ, ಊ,  ಎ, ಏ, ಐ, ಒ, ಓ, ಔ, ಅಂ, ಅ:"
Su's Question:  "Where is that alphabet that begins with R that you didn't teach me today???" It took me a while to realize that she meant ಋ as in ಋಷಿ.

A quarter!!!!!

60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour, 24  hours in a day, 365 days in a year. 1 year seems to be too much. The earth has been around for billions of years. As per wikipedia, Bede began his history of the world with 3952 BC. That makes it more than 6000 years to mankind. Each year is less than 0.1%. Does a few years here and there make any difference to the Universe? No, I don't know the answer. Does a few years matter to me? Yes, it does. When it is 8 years out of the 32 years of my life, it makes a huge difference. It is a quarter of the life I have lived. This quarter has been a quite significant quarter of my life which i have spent with my husband Shri.

Thank Heavens

Done with the itchy seven

Lets see what's completion of eight

has got on its plate

to which my boss said
The trick with the eight
Depends on the bait
It’s all in your gait
To keep the man straight !

I couldn't be late in my response and here it is

Without being late

I must appreciate

The poetry is great

But will have to wait

Next year until this date

To see if he remains straight

Until then,

I take the clue

Without being blue

Don’t know how time flew

But Shri & I remain nut and screw

Bye Bye 2011, Welcome to 2012

Interesting is the only word that comes up to my mind when I think of 2011. 2011 has been a mixed bag of emotions. With a lots of up and a lots of down, the year was a roller coaster ride.

The year didn't see a good daughter in me though it saw both a good and a bad mother. The bad mom was me and the good one was my mom :P I didn't get to see a lot of my parents as much as they got to be with my daughter. No complaints on the second aspect. The daughter never stayed over at her parents' for even a night in 2011. Hope she does better this year.

The wife gifted 7 gifts to the husband for the 7th anniversary. Later celebrated husband's bday with a few friends where the friends wrote "Parpel Gudda" on the T Shirt. As a couple, we spent some time together with each other when Sumedhaa was not around. The wife got a break from the husband and he too got a break while the wife was at Canada.

Loosing and finding Sumedhaa was the biggest lack of responsibility of being a mother this year. Not being around for Sumedhaa's birthday. Later I left her at Shri's mercy to go to Canada twice for 1 month each. No toys, be it Alligator, Snake or the tag readers and books will make up for this. Yet, I have spent more time with her in 2011 than in any other year.

This year has been good for the inlaw in me. Everyone was very happy and we all enjoyed Santhosh's wedding. My mother in law left to Udupi in December when I was in Canada and I was not the reason. That was such a relief.

Had less of friends time, especially with Madhav, Varsha and Shrinath. Had a lot of good time with Sowmya, Hardik & Souvik.

Din't do very well as an Employee. Have not worked towards full utilization of my capacity. Yet got an opportunity to go onsite to Canada. That was a good achievement.

Overall the year went on well. Financially also the year went on well thanks to Shri's movement from AOL to HP. We bought a Ford Fiesta. Helped mom to buy a Mohan Maale. Did a lot of trips with family and friends. Had been to Bandipur, Rappa Valley, Chickmagalur and finally to Wayanad.

Just as someone said on FB, the resolutions remain the same, only the years change... The feeling is that the year 2012 is going to be something like that for me.

Back from Hiatus
